iFIlm Review: ‘The Tribes of Palos Verdes’

by Peter Debruge, Variety

December 1, 2017

After 19 long years, Joy Nicholson’s ocean-spray coming-of-age tale “The Tribes of Palos Verdes” has finally found its way to the screen, and though there’s virtually zero sense of anticipation surrounding the arrival of this once-hot property, directors Emmett and Brendan Malloy have done right by the source material — a West Coast answer to Ang Lee’s Connecticut-set “The Ice Storm,” which came hit theaters a year before her novel was published. Like one of those surfers who blithely changes out of his wetsuit between parked cars along the Pacific Coast Highway, “Tribes” skins back the veneer of upper-middle-class suburbia, only to reveal heartbreak and dysfunction underneath.

'Coup d’Etat': Film Review | Napa Valley 2017

by Justin Lowe, The Hollywood Reporter

November 21, 2017

Michael Caine stars as a ruthless dictator alongside Katie Holmes and Odeya Rush in this fiercely funny social satire.

Whether it’s crazed Communists threatening to rain nukes on half the planet or overgrown frat boys bullying the other half of the world into cowering submission, there’s not much humor to be found in contemporary world affairs. Clearly what’s needed is a pointed satire highlighting the inherent absurdity governing global politics today, and Coup d’Etat may just fit the bill.

AFM A-List: 18 Hot Titles at This Year's Market

Pamela McClintock, Hollywood Reporter

November 4, 2014

Foreign film distributors seeking to fill their 2015 and 2016 slates will have a diverse lineup from which to choose at AFM -- but whether they decide to bite and prebuy a project before it begins shooting is another question because many have been burned by a star dropping out. "You can't go out with something that isn't fully baked," says Sierra/Affinity CEO Nick Meyer. Lotus co-chairman Bill Johnson agrees: "The bull's-eye has gotten pretty narrow in terms of what distributors will aggressively prebuy." Insiders say a handful of potential high-profile projects still hope to close before AFM gets underway Nov. 5, but as it now stands, here are the titles high on buyers' lists (some have even started shooting).
